Alarm categories

A thorough advice

The specifications for the various alarm categories changed on 1 January 2003. Because insurance companies need time to adjust their alarm requirements, the current approvals remain valid until 1 July 2004. These requirements may vary from one insurance company to the next. We recommend that you contact your insurance company or get in touch with your contact at LeasePlan.

Passenger cars

Category 1 - Engine immobilizer
Electrical system with at least a double automatically activated immobilizer. This double immobilizer contains an immobilizer for the starter engine and an additional immobilizer, usually on the fuel supply. The system does not include detection or an alarm. Certified engine immobilizers that are fitted ex works to vehicles are connected to the motor management.

Category 2 - Alarm system
Category 1 plus burglary detection and alarm (siren).

Category 3 - Alarm system
Category 2, plus sabotage detection and tilt detection. The siren that provides acoustic detection is fitted with a built-in emergency power supply. The centre and the siren are connected by a coded signal. If the wire between the siren and the centre is cut, the siren will be triggered, using the emergency power supply.

Category 4 - Vehicle tracking system
Category 1 or 3 system plus a vehicle tracking system, which is activated by a movement sensor or after the owner's theft report. *

Category 5 - Vehicle tracking system
Category 1 or 3 plus a vehicle tracking system, which is activated when the alarm is triggered. *

* The theft and burglary alarms from approved systems are processed exclusively by authorized alarm centres (PACs). These are the same alarm centres that process alarms for residential security. Only these alarm centres are authorized to report alarms to the police.
